Apple streaming-TV service to be free for device users: report
Apple Inc. will let users of its devices watch its yet-to-be-launched streaming video service for free, according to a report by CNBC on Wednesday. Users of Apple iPhones, iPads and Apple TV will find the “TV” service pre-installed, CNBC said, citing unnamed sources. The service will include original content and third-party channels that customers can subscribe to, such as HBO and Starz. Sources suggested to CNBC that the offering could turn into more of a paid, Netflix-like service down the line. Apple offers free trials to its streaming Music service, but only for three months. It was unclear how long the streaming video service might be free for Apple users, and raised the question of how Apple plans to make money from it. The tech giant is expected to spend around $1 billion this year to create shows for its still unnamed service, and has production deals with big Hollywood names such as Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Apple has about 24 series in development, which will be largely PG-rated, without excessive sex or violence, and intended to appeal to a wide audience, the Wall Street Journal reported last month.
