On Thursday, activists manned barricades and blocked streets in the capital, Managua, during a 24-hour strike.

Protesters have been demanding the resignation of President Daniel Ortega since April.

The upheaval began after Ortega tried to introduce changes to social security policy; the changes have since been withdrawn, but public anger at the government has not abated.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reports.
