Trump opens NATO summit by saying Germany is a ‘captive’ of Russia

President Donald Trump took aim at ally Germany in particular in his first public comments at an opening breakfast at NATO’s annual summit Wednesday. “Germany, as far as I’m concerned, is captive of Russia because it is getting so much of its energy from Russia,” Trump said, referencing Germany’s gas deal. Trump again all-but ordered members of the alliance to increase their defense spending “immediately.” Trump had signaled ahead of the trip that his mission was to secure greater spending into NATO from other members, but critics were skeptical of the tough-talk approach, with some relations already strained by recent trade moves. Trump is set to meet with both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday. He meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.
